Sitting at a pub or a diner, in a city that you’ve never seen, and thinking about anything but work, sounds like the ideal place to be any time of year. Vacation time is a pleasant daydream when one isn’t on one, and a lovely place to be living when it’s happening. For most people, perhaps, sitting at the same pub and having a conversation with a local about the reasons nitto are ideal for racing, doesn’t sound like taking your work with you. But for hot rod enthusiasts, it sort of is. But in so many ways, it sort of doesn’t matter. Being in the hot rod culture does mean a dedication to living a little bit differently than the rest of the world. It means that the idea of a permanent vacation isn’t just a daydream, but a real possibility, if only the daily requirements of food and shelter could stay out of the way.
One wouldn’t necessarily expect that hot rodders need their own vacation spots, because so much of the paved world is already made for us. But there are some places that are far superior to the others. This is based on the kinds of potential fun in the roads, the local culture and their levels of positive reception to loud engines, and the places that rate high for spectacular scenery, both urban and natural. While there are some who do find the idea of hot rodding in Hawaii a little troubling, because of the environmental protection initiatives on the islands, there are others who love to be part of the large spectacles and gatherings.
For the others, the ones who like to be at least a little bit lone wolf, and travel away from the pack, the world really is an oyster if there’s pavement. All that’s necessary for preparations are the simplest things, like packing socks and underwear, checking the treads on the nexen’s, and then heading out in whichever direction the road looks the sweetest. There are some truly excellent rides in the world, places that could adequately serve up a very memorable hot rod vacation. The usual suspects are all possibilities for the perfect itinerary, the twisty roads in the Carolinas, the mountains and deserts of Arizona
and Colorado, and just about any part of the historic route 66. Historic routes are often the ones that have the greatest distraction for vacationers looking for the perfect combination of road travel and entertainment for anyone in the party who may not be fanatics about things with gears. Improvisation is really the key here, that ability to change plans at the last moment because some other route becomes more inviting, but anyone who’s been in the lifestyle for even a little while understands that improvisation is everything.
